Decorating as a Family: Top Tips to Getting Your Way!

June 22, 2023

While redecorating your home as a family project may sound daunting, it can become one of your greatest accomplishments as a unit. There are many advantages and strategies to incorporate the entire family while remodelling a room or your entire home. When your children participate in the renovation of the home, they will experience a stronger sense of pride and ownership, and you will have the opportunity to teach them valuable life lessons along the way.

Plan Together

Sometimes just imagining and generating ideas is more enjoyable than finishing the design or project. Work together to make a mood board with the whole family, then let each individual present their ideas to you like real interior designers. It might sometimes be as easy as asking them what they enjoy and want. Do they have any suggestions? You do not need to follow through on every request but pay attention, discuss the pros and cons, and encourage their critical thinking, perceptiveness, and originality.

Letting the children or even your partner pick your colour palette could make you feel a bit anxious but there are solutions for that. You might start by offering them a range of colours to choose from. Allowing them to choose accent colours (while you have chosen the main neutral palette) is another way to give them a say. Use it in accessories, throw pillows or artwork.

Let Them Get Busy

Depending on your children’s ages, there are some tasks that are more appropriate than others. Hand-eye coordination, attention to detail, and vital safety skills can all be developed by taking part in these activities. Consider not only their age and ability level when designating the task but also their hobbies. This will make the project more special and memorable for them. Painting projects are another great area to get the youngsters involved. It’s a fun way to involve your children in redecorating while teaching them practical lifelong DIY skills. It could be a good idea for novice volunteers to aid with the first coat so that you can handle the following coats or touch-ups yourself. Painting is a cheap method to modify a room’s appearance significantly.

Adults-Only Design vs Kids-Only Design

You could come to an agreement to have one room in the house where the children have no say in the decoration style, and another where the adults have no (or very little!) say. You might choose to tackle the formal sitting room or your bedroom to reflect your personal taste and unique style. Here you can go all-out contemporary chic and seek guidance from ligne roset Chelsea when selecting an iconic piece or pieces.

For their solo project, you could give them the casual living area, a playroom, or their bedrooms to design. In addition to helping them learn valuable lessons like how to collaborate and compromise, you’ll also be fostering their emotional growth. Many child psychologists believe that allowing your children to design their own rooms increases their sense of security in their own environment, communicates your confidence in their ability to make decisions, and gives them an outlet for creative expression.

There are no right or wrong designs when it comes to determining what your home should look like. It must reflect the family who lives there, including all their quirks and idiosyncrasies even if that means it changes from room to room.
