Is Your Dog Ill? 3 Signs to Watch Out For

May 28, 2021

No one wants to think about their beloved pet being ill, being in pain, or off-color, but unfortunately, it always happens. It’s never easy to watch your dog act differently or stop doing the things it enjoys, and the hardest part is that a dog can never tell you when they’re in pain or what’s wrong. That’s why it’s even more important as a responsible pet owner to watch out for some common indications that something could be wrong with your pet dog.

What Are the Common Illnesses in Dogs?

Despite the worry and concern your pet being ill can cause, a lot of illnesses will be manageable and treatable, just like human flu or the common cold. However, some illnesses can be very severe and life-changing for both you and your dog.

Some common illnesses you might see in your dog during its lifetime include:

  • Ear, eye, and skin infections
  • Wounds, such as bleeding cuts
  • Urinary infections
  • Arthritis
  • Hip dysplasia
  • Obesity
  • Dental problems
  • Kennel cough
  • Inflammation of the stomach

Some illnesses will be very difficult to determine, which is why it’s always important to pay attention to your dog’s behavior and commit to regular checks.

3 Signs to Watch Out For

  • Change in Eating and Drinking Habits

Any change in this habit can be worthy of note. This is particularly important if your dog is suddenly not eating and also if it is excessively drinking and being thirsty all the time, even when resting at home without having rigorous exercise.

Not only can a change in eating habits indicate something further, such as intestinal problems or even dental problems, it also prompts worry about weight changes, too.

  • Being Vocal and Moving Around

As a pet owner, only you will know what your dog’s normal behavior is, which is why it’s easy to spot when your dog is suddenly acting differently unprompted. It’s important to remember that dogs will not always be vocal about being in pain, so even if they’re not whining, this doesn’t mean there isn’t an issue. However, if your dog is suddenly whining continuously, even screeching or howling in pain, growling, and also moving restlessly, this is an indication that something might be wrong. You can always call an emergency vet, too, like Colonialblvdanimalhospital.com, if your dog’s behavior is suddenly erratic and they seem in pain.

  • Changes in Faeces and Urine

Make sure to always be checking your dog’s feces and urine when out on walks to make sure everything appears normal. Indications that something is wrong include blood in your dog’s urine, blood in stool, or if feces is extremely black in color.

Most dogs will suffer from diarrhea every now and again, but if you notice that the diarrhea doesn’t improve, it’s also worthy of note. Additionally, if your dog is having trouble peeing or pooping, or if they aren’t doing this at all, this is also an important sign something else may be going on.

If you’re ever unsure about your dog’s state, always speak with a vet. Even if it ends up being nothing, it’s always worth checking.
