4 Things That Happen When You Take a Break From Alcohol

June 15, 2023

There are many different reasons why you might choose to take a break from alcohol. Perhaps you’re looking to clear your mind, or maybe you’re just looking to try a healthier way of living.

Whatever your motivation is behind cutting out alcohol from your life, you can only experience good things. Don’t believe it? Here are some of the incredible things that happen when you choose to take a break from drinking.

Better Sleep

A common misconception about alcohol is that it helps you sleep. While it may be true that it can help you pass out faster, it’s much more difficult to stay asleep. Alcohol disrupts your body’s sleep rhythms and as such you can find yourself twisting and turning throughout the night.

You’ll find that after 30 days of eliminating alcohol from your diet that your sleep quality is significantly improved. Opting for something like Kava instead of alcohol can still provide the relaxing benefits that a glass of wine can without interrupting your REM stage of sleep and without a pesky headache the next day.

Improved Mood

After a few drinks many of us find ourselves giggling and maybe even more outgoing than we are sober. However, this comes with after-effects. The next day we can find ourselves anxious, and possibly even moody.

This is because alcohol can significantly impact your overall mental health. When you eliminate alcohol from your life, you won’t just find that your mood is significantly improved, but you’ll even find reduced anxiety and a more positive outlook on life overall.

Weight Loss

The average alcoholic beverage contains 200 calories a glass. If you drink more than three units a week, then you’re adding a significant amount of calories to your diet. It goes without saying that eliminating these drinks can make a big difference in your waistline.

Even the simple act of reducing your alcohol intake could lead to weight loss. Not to mention when we drink alcohol we tend to crave greasy foods. Anyone who says they’ve never found themselves at a McDonald’s drive-in after a night out isn’t telling the truth.

Eliminating alcohol altogether for 30 to 60 days may be the weight loss solution you’ve been waiting for.

Saved Money

The price of alcohol can add up over the course of the month, particularly if you’re drinking in bars. Taking a break from alcohol can help you save a substantial amount of money. There are even apps available that can help you calculate how much money you’ve saved depending on how long you take a break from drinking.

When you have a quantified representation of just how much money you’re spending on alcohol, giving up drinking can be incredibly motivating. If you’re saving up for something in particular, consider putting aside savings with the money you would have otherwise spent at a bar. You’d be surprised to find how much you have left over at the end of a few weeks.
