Protecting Your Property From the Dangers of a Natural Disaster

December 18, 2019

If you live somewhere like California or Florida where a natural disaster is likely to occur then it is essential that you do all that you can to make sure that you have done all you can to protect your property from the potential damage that can be done. Hurricanes, earthquakes, wild fires and tornadoes have been known to cause untold damage and whilst there is no guarantee that your home will come through such an event unscathed, there is still plenty that you can do to ensure the damage is minimized.

Home Warranty and Insurance

The first thing that experts will tell you is that you must have both home insurance and home warranty. Whilst you probably already have the insurance, it is essential that you understand why you need the home warranty too. This policy will protect the systems and large appliances in your home which the insurance will not and you will need one of these plans if a natural disaster happens in your area. You only need to look at the First American Home Warranty reviews to see just how much these plans have saved home owners who have been victims of a naturally disaster. When searching for home warranty policies be sure to pay attention to the reviews, the price, customer service and the quality of the company offering the protection.

Earthquake Tips

The key to securing your home from an earthquake is bolt down as much stuff as you possibly can in the home. The biggest damage which takes place during an earthquake is as a direct result of things falling, so be sure that your closets have a latch which will prevent them from opening and that expensive and large items are secured to prevent them from falling and breaking, or hurting someone.

Fires

For wildfires the only thing that you can really do is to ensure that the perimeter of your home is clear from anything that could catch fire. Remember that earth won’t naturally catch fire so if you have a clearance zone around the property then you may be able to avoid any flames getting close to your home.

Hurricanes

When it comes to hurricanes and tornadoes the best option for you is to make sure that the wind is not entering into the house. Ensure that windows and doors are sealed, invest in a solid garage door with no gaps and you could also look to buy shutters for windows and doors to give further protection. Another option is to buy hurricane straps which will ensure that the structure of the property is much more resistant to the wind, this can help the property to stay put and reduce the amount of work needed on it after the event.

You have to be prepared for the worst if you live in a natural disaster zone and in doing so you’ll save yourself time and money.
